The journey so far

We spent our first night in The Gambia with a schoolboy, a policeman and a former government minister in a brothel’s bar, before moving onto Banjul to battle the “bumsters” (tourist hustlers). After getting a few visas, we took the dirt road on the southern bank of The Gambia River into rural Gambia, through more millet and peanut fields, silk cotton trees and termite mounds, and the still confusing alternation between aggressive shouts of “Toubab! Give me money!” and warm welcomes and kindness. We took a few days off to record sounds by the river before crossing into southern Senegal (Casamance).

From the Gambian border we cycled the short hop through Casamance to the Guinea-Bissau border, taking several days off to enjoy the laidback warmth of the region (easily our favourite so far, despite being in a state of high alert).

The journey will end in Namibia, some time in 2011 (probably), and we’ll be updating this page as we go.
