Geotag Icon Fantasia (and the power of women)

audio, people posted by on May 19th, 2009

A team of horsewomen at a tradional Fantasia festivalWe stumbled across this traditional display of horsemanship as we were pedalling from Rabat to Casablanca in northern Morocco. We weren’t too sure what it was all about until we met a Moroccan and French couple who explained it all to us – and a lot more besides…

The traditional festival, Fantasia, which we stumbled across on the road between Rabat and Casablanca in northern Morocco. It’s a celebration of horsemanship (and, more recently, horsewomanship) in which the aim is for a team of horsemen to fire their muskets at the same time. Photographs by Huw, May 2009. You can also listen to our sound recording of the event, Fantasia (and the Power of Women).

Geotag Icon First impressions from the Maghreb

What with working on all the new sound recordings, I’ve run out of time to write a proper blog, so I’m just going to hit you with a series of impressions – pretty much as they hit me when our ferry pulled into Tangier and we pedalled into Africa.

Heat, dust, horns, potholes. Smells of ripe food, rubbish and the sea. Which side of the road are they driving on? (The middle?)

Geotag Icon Introducing… Bike Mic, in Rabat

audio, travelogues posted by on May 8th, 2009

Bike Mic is a small, tough microphone wedged between the handlebars and bar bag with a high tech device (a piece of foam). In this first Bike Mike recording (of many, I suspect), Huw describes our approach to Rabat, while Bex gets us lost.

Geotag Icon Birdsong (nightingale)

audio, wildlife posted by on May 8th, 2009

Again, recorded in the botanical gardens near Rabat, Morocco as we sat out the heat of the day and made our first wildlife recordings. We didn’t get a positive identification on the bird – anyone know? (Update: we have it on good authority that this is a nightingale – see comments.)

Sahara frog in the botanical gardens near Rabat, Morocco

A Sahara frog, recorded in the botanical gardens near Rabat, Morocco. It’s not the world’s best wildlife recording but it is our first, so we thought we’d post it. You’ll be able to tell we’re still getting to grips with our super sensitive shotgun microphone.
